FHN Offers Two $99 Heart Tests for Heart Month

Most heart attacks could be prevented with early diagnosis of risk factors through tests such as the two FHN is offering for only $99 each for Heart Month in February. The calcium scoring CT heart scan and/or a standard treadmill test can determine artery health today, which is a predictor of heart health in the future. Appointments for these tests must be scheduled by Wednesday, February 29 to obtain the special $99 price, but the tests can be performed in February or later (by August 31).

The calcium scoring CT heart scan uses 64-slice CT scanner technology to detect calcified plaque in arteries, which in any amount is an indication of potential heart issues. This non-invasive x-ray takes only a few minutes to complete and is appropriate for individuals not physically able to complete a standard treadmill stress test.

FHN's treadmill stress test detects the difference between healthy and blocked arteries during exercise. When a person exercises, healthy coronary arteries become more open than an artery that has a blockage to allow more blood flow. This results in more blood going to heart muscle supplied by the normal arteries and less to heart muscle supplied by narrowed (blocked) arteries. This may result in symptoms such as chest discomfort or unhealthy shortness of breath during the test, or may only be discovered through the EKG (electrocardiogram) readings from the test. Standard treadmill stress tests are a good option for people who have unexplained fatigue or shortness of breath, are susceptible to irregular heartbeat during exercise, or to evaluate blood pressure response to exercise in individuals who have existing or borderline high blood pressure. Those choosing this option must be able to walk.
