Health Alert – Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Cases in Stephenson County

The Stephenson County Health Department has reported a number of cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in the county. Pertussis is a bacterial disease that affects the lungs, and can be very serious, especially in infants.

Pertussis is spread from person to person through the air. When first infected, people may display symptoms similar to a cold: Sneezing, runny nose, a low-grade fever and cough. After one or two weeks, the cough becomes severe. Pertussis can last four to six weeks or longer.

For more information on pertussis, read this FAQ.

If you have any of these pertussis symptoms: A runny nose, sneezing or cough, please …

  • DO contact your healthcare provider.
  • DO wash your hands frequently, cover your cough, and limit exposure to others.
