H1N1 Virus ("swine flu") Basics

You can protect yourself from the H1N1 virus with the same precautions you use against "normal" flu:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
  • If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them. You’re considered contagious as long as you have symptoms, and can be contagious for as long as a week after the onset of illness.

If you become ill with influenza-like symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Department of Health and Human Services are providing frequent updates on the H1N1 virus on their Web sites. Click on the green tile above to go to the CDC Web site, where you can find the latest updates about the virus, as well as more information in general.
