In His Own Words

"Advanced Diagnostics, State-of-the-Art Cryosurgery Help Magician Beat Cancer"

Not many people feel lucky to have had cancer. But local magician Cy Crothers knows it's true in his case.

After an elevated PSA prompted family practice physician Brian Bennett, MD to suggest further screening, a CT scan was ordered by FHN urologist David DiDomenico, MD, DO, FACS. He found prostate cancer, along with something more — a life-threatening aneurysm that needed immediate treatment.

Fortunately, prompt surgery repaired Cy's aneurysm... but he still had to deal with his prostate problem. He met with Dr. DiDomenico to consider options and after a thorough discussion, Cy chose cryosurgery, an innovative medical technique with roots in the 19th century.

"This therapy freezes the prostate," Dr. DiDomenico explains. "We use argon and helium gases along with ultrasound probes for precise control. The minimally invasive process kills cancer cells with less damage to surrounding tissue, and the patient can go home that day or after an overnight stay." Dr. DiDomenico completed special training to perform cryosurgery and has been using the technique for more than 5 years.

Cy is now relieved to be cancer-free. "It was over and done with faster than other treatments and with less risk. Other than having a catheter for a bit, my recovery was quick and relatively pain-free. I'd go the same route again and recommend it to others. The best thing? I don't have to think about it anymore. I'm back at the golf course and practicing my tricks. I may be a magician, but Dr. D is the one who made my cancer disappear!"
